The Deutsch Langhaar combines the bloodlines of a bird-, hawk- and water dog as well as of Bracken (Scenthounds). He therefore has scope for great versatility. Pure breeding has been carried out since the year 1879 and main characteristics of the breed laid down. In the year 1897, Baron von Schorlemer set down the first standard for the Deutsch Langhaar and thus laid the foundation stone for today's pure breeding.
In 1879 the standard for the breed was established and have been adhered to since that time. In 1890 at a breed show exhibit in Germany five distinctive lines were recognized as the most desirable for the breed. The stud dogs Mylord, Job, Don, Roland and Kalkstein were the genetic base for the Deutsch Langhaar as we know it today. These five dogs showed the best anatonomical and instinctive hunting traits of all the male dogs in the show. Kalkstein was the only brown and white-ticked dog selected - the other four were solid brown in color.
The Deutsch Langhaar is regarded through Europe as an exceptional hunting and gundog with exceptional pointing, tracking and retrieving skills. The breed combines grace with power as well as pace with style, yet displays a calm and quiet disposition. In Germany many professional hunters prefer the DL, because of their reliable tracking and retrieving skills on big and small game alike. Even pests such as raccoons and foxes are expected to be retrieved. The DL is a truly versatile gundog for the on foot hunter.
