At Illertal Kennels our goals are set to the highest standards to produce quality gundogs for the serious hunter in North America. The dogs we use for breeding are all registered and certified to breed with the Deutsch Langhaar Verband (DLV). They are bred to the strictest German standards and have all been tested in the German system thru JGHV testing organizations. We have tested with the VDD-GNA as well as the JGV-USA. Breed certification through Germany requires numerous qualifications.

Dogs must pass a puppy test (VJP) as well as a breeder test (HZP), they must have their hips evaluated through Germany, have no physical defects (missing teeth, underbite, entropic or ectropic eyes, etc) as well as no known hereditary defects. DL's are also judged in a breed show for type, coat and conformation. This is done by registered German breed judges. Puppies from a German registered litter will have a tattoo number in their right ear which indicates the order of their birth in a particular year. (i.e. 475/07 means it was the 475th pup born and registered in 2007). While it may seem a bit overwhelming at first, just remember this system has been in place in Germany for over 100 years. It is the reason your Deutsch Langhaar will be the quality versatile gundog you expect.
Many breeds have been "Americanized" over the years, but by breeding to the strict German standards we can offer an exceptional hunting companion as well as an even-tempered dog to be enjoyed by all members of your family.
Utilizing the support of the 100 year old parent breed club (DLV) as well as the expert knowledge of many DL breeders, judges and kennel owners in Germany, we will continue to breed our DL's to the high standards they have set, thus continuing the excellent quality versatile dog you expect!!!
